Can one purchase a Directv box without renting?

I have Directv, which allows one free box, any additional you have to "lease" for $4.99 a month. Is this just the way it is or can I give the leased box back and buy my own box without paying the extra charge?

Hi blr8t2,

They will not sell boxes. If you buy one from somewhere you can't activate it. The boxes are coded and they can authorize or turn them off remotely.It is their way of getting extra money.

That is the reason I chose to stay with cable. Both Direct and Dish would charge a rental fee for every TV. We have 4 TVs and I wasn't going to pay that much extra.
