I believe that tourists are no longer allowed to feed the pigeons in St. Mark's Square in Venice Italy, but an unable to back this up by any documentation. Does any know if I am correct, and if so, is there any evidence to back up this perspective?

  1. As of about six months ago it was not only allowed, there were vendors who actually sell bird food in the square.  I used to live in Italy and have never heard of tourists not being able to feed the pidgeons.

  2. yes u can.. they have people selling the food for one euro a bag. My back up? Well my back up is myself I just came from italy (yesterday).

  3. As of my visit to Venice just last week, the answer is definitely yes.  It costs one euro to buy a small bag of corn.  The pigeons are amazing, and a swarm will go crazy for the food, and land on every part of you to get at the corn.  A little frightening at first, but the birds are harmless.  The only danger is not to kick or step on any as they crowd around you.

  4. As of September 10, 2006 feeding pigeons St. Mark's Square in Venice, Italy was still allowed.  Two separate ordinances under consideration appear to be at odds with each other. One forbids the feeding of pigeons. The other grants concessions to sell bags of corn to tourists — 3 1/2 ounces for $1.30.  It does not appear that an ordinance has been put into effect as of yet for or against feeding the pigeons.

  5. yes, i was just recently there this past summer.  You will need a euro though to buy some food.

  6. I am italian, there is no low that avoid you to feed pigeons. You can do it, dont worry ;-)

  7. Yeah you're allowed to, and if you stand still enough they'll land on you to. (i've been there. even if it is a law the itlian police could care less i bet.)

  8. I was there a year ago in January, and there were people selling feed within the plaza...they were very annoying though. (the pigeons)

It is very likely things have changed since though.
