  4. Hello Dori,

Knock is a shrine to our Blessed Lady, who appeard to about 15 people so the readings tell us, and as well as having many massas every day, it has a museum to the fact of how people lived in the area at the time of the Holy apparition, The Holy Father Pope John 2 was at Knock in 1979, and I missed him, by a day, I was so sorry, The church at Knock is a beauitiful place well worthy of any catholics prayers and intentions, Holy water is available for you to breing home with you, take as much as you need, and take some too for your friends who cannot get to Knock to wonder and weep tears of joy just for its very existence.

There are shops and a portable marketplace that will supply all the religious statues and other artifacts to do with outr religion, but please be aware that you may be overcharged by these fellow 'believers' If you can book into a hotel for say a week-end at Knock, you would be well justified, for it takes longer than a quick call in to take everything into your mind and heart. You will feel really nice inside after your visit...A prayer for my intentions please.. and you are assured of a prayer by myself for yours too.. Bye, and please God Love and Bless you.....Tony M

  5. Knock is a very tacky place with nothing but a big church. You do get holy water on tap though.

Mountshannon is a small and very pretty village in Co. Clare that looks out onto Lough Derg and Holy Island. Its worth a look. Holy Island is a small island with an old round tower and monastery.

If its a choice between both, choose Mountshannon!

  6. see below.

  7. Knock is a Marion Shrine.During the Irish Famine, when the staple crop of potatoes failed and people were starving two children witnessed the appearance of Our Lady at the Gable end of a church. The West of Ireland was very poor and depressed and this occurance was reckoned to be a "sign from above" of strength and support to aid people in the crises. The Pope visited Knock when he came to Ireland.People have claimed to be cured of serious illness at Knock by touching the Gable wall where Our Lady appeared. It rains a lot there bring a good weatherproof coat if contemplating a visit.

  8. Tacky, full of tacky shops selling plastic religeous items. Mary and baby Jesus, and baby Jesus`s eyes light up. That kind of thing.

  9. On the wet Thursday evening of the 21st August, 1879, at about the hour of 8 o'clock, Our Lady, St. Joseph, and St. John the Evangelist appeared in a blaze of Heavenly light at the south gable of the Church of St. John the Baptist. Behind them and a little to the left of St. John was a plain altar. On the altar was a cross and a lamb with adoring angels. The Apparition was seen by fifteen people whose ages ranged from six years to seventy-five and included men, women, teenagers and children.

The poor humble witnesses distinctly beheld the Blessed Virgin Mary clothed in white robes with a brilliant crown on her head. Over the forehead where the crown fitted the brow, she wore a beautiful full-bloom golden rose. She was in an attitude of prayer with her eyes and hands raised towards Heaven. St. Joseph stood on Our Lady's right. He was turned towards her in an attitude of respect. His robes were also white. St. John was on Our Lady's left. He was dressed in white vestments and resembled a bishop, with a small mitre. He appeared to be preaching and he held an open book in his left hand.

The witnesses watched the Apparition in pouring rain for two hours, reciting the Rosary. Although the witnesses standing before the gable were drenched, no rain fell in the direction of the gable. They felt the ground carefully with their hands and it was perfectly dry as was the gable itself

  10. The Story of Knock began on the 21st August 1879 when Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church. The apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young and old. From this miraculous occurrence Knock has grown to the status of an internationally recognised Marian Shrine.

The personal pilgrimage of Pope John Paul II in 1979, commemorating the centenary of the apparition, inspired an even greater devotion to the Shrine and endorsed the indelible seal of Vatican approval. Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited the Shrine in June of 1993. One and a half million pilgrims visit the Shrine annually.
