Question:

Can one tell the s*x/gender of 3 day old kittens?

My cat had litter of 5 and people are already interested to have them in six weeks time, but want to know the gender.

I've heard of someone who bought a male kitten from a pet shop, and found out a few months later that it was female.

I would hate to have kittens returned because I made a mistake. And I can't afford to take them to the vet to check each of them either.

I havent tried to check yet, as I don't want to disturb them.

So is it too soon to tell?

  1. pet shops do not screen anyone. they sell to the highest bidder. they even use kittens as snake food sometimes. you need to turn them all over to a rescue group or a no kill shelter. either have the mom spayed or give her up too. this is just incredibly irresponsible of you to let her breed when you can't afford to take them in even for basic care. YES you can tell the gender of a kitten even when it is new born, especially if you have experience with it.

What do you mean they do not accept kittens older than 6 - 7 weeks old?? This is a HUGE red flag!! Kittens should not even be taken from their mothers until they are at least 8 weeks old. Please call a rescue group or a no-kill shelter near you!!!

  2. It could be too soon Many times it is nearly impossible to tell the gender until they are a little older and more developed.

Wow! Please hold out on giving the kittens to a pet shop. Firstly, any place that would take a kitten at 6 weeks old has no interest in the kittens. 8 weeks is the minimum age to re-home them as they need this time with their mother to learn so many things and to grow into well adjusted cats. Please, place adds with pictures if possible in  veterinarian offices, newspapers and ask friends and relatives if they would like one of your beautiful kittens. Pet shops are not the way to go.

  3. you shouldn't give someone a kitten if its too young to tell the gender. they need to be with their mothers. some people on this site are stupid. apparently your one of them. and you shouldn't give a kitten away to someone who would return them because of their gender. a bond between an owner and pet should be based on love.

  4. i think u can tell of 3 days old kitten i believe anytime really

  5. Before two weeks of age, it is very difficult to tell, but not impossible.

Here is an illustration showing the differences between male and female kittens:

  6. nooooooooooooooooooooo.   You simply have to wait for the benefit of the animal.  Love them for 8 weeks and then you can probably tell.  Just compare.  They don't even know.  And what does it matter?

  7. well there are 2 ways but for me the easiest way is to do it is look under it's tail like this http://www.peteducation.com/images/artic...

A female kitten will have what looks like an upside down exclamation mark, whereas a male will look more like a colon. the male's urinary opening is lower than the female's and he will also have a little lump between his a**s and this opening. This will become his testicles.

the other way to tell is gently squeeze the urinary opening. If the tip of the p***s appears it's  a male

  8. It's never too soon to tell, but sexing kittens is pretty hard. Most people tend to get it wrong.

I'll tell you a little story that our vet told us when we took our kitten in:

A woman's cat had a litter of 6. Her husband sexed them all. When she brought them to the vet's for their first shots, he sexed them as well. When he was done, she told him that her husband had sexed them as well. Every gender her husband said was wrong. The bad part was, he was an M.D.

It just goes to show, kittens arent' the easiest things.

  9. Male kittens and female kittens gender parts look just like the older cats'.

Just in smaller proportion. If someone had to return a kitten for that reason, I don't think they knew what they were looking at.

  10. Yes.

If it has a lump down there, its a boy.

If it has lips, than it's a girl.

  11. It's possible, but very very hard. And mistakes can be made.

It's rather fickle of them to want to return the cat because it's the wrong gender. In any case, you should be able to tell a bit better around 10 days.

  12. It's a little hard to tell at this point, though not impossible.  (Click the link below.)  However, if the mother is cool about it, don't worry too much about disturbing them.  The more accustomed they are to human handling, the better they will be through their lives with human contact.

However, 6 weeks is a bit young to let them go.  8 weeks is pretty much the minimum age at which it should happen.  12 weeks is ideal.

  13. You can tell just like the adult cats, but i sugest you wait until there 3 months old until you touch them because the mother cat will harm the kittens if has a different scent on it. I know alot about cats so trust me.

  14. I can.I've had cats for over 40 years,so it's easy. But you would have to post pics of all of the kittie's "bits." Also, you should get the mother cat spayed so you won't have to worry about more kittens.

  15. tell them that its too soon too tell. if they wat it now, tell them its impossible. theres really no way to tell at 3 days. try 3 weeks.
