I REALLY want to go on one of those overseas high school student exchanges -probably way more than those rich kids who go on them. I've cheeked out all the programs and they are sooooooooooooo expensive (like 7-10 thousand). My mum would like to send me on one but we simply can't afford it and I have other brothers and sisters too who need the money. There are the scholoships and stuff but realistically there really hard to get. Is there anything I can do or am I just wasting my time looking?

  1. I went overseas on exchange, and I am from a very poor background. I managed to do it because rather than doing a study exchange, I did a work exchange, via BUNAC, during college. They require a fee which isn't tiny, but certainly isn't $7,000, and they arrange for you to get a 9 month work visa, and depending on what you plan to do (work in a restaurant versus work at a summer camp) they may also help you find a placement. So you go to, say, Ireland or the US, find a job or do the job they found for you, work to support yourself, and get a real international experience. You can do the exchange for a summer, or a term, or for nine months just after you graduate from university.

So if scholarships and etc. don't work out for a high school exchange, focus on doing one in college instead, and perhaps do it via BUNAC, so it's a work exchange rather than study.

  2. Scholarships are extremely hard to find. But if there is a scholarship worth $1000, you have to put forth a $1000 worth of effort to get it. Good luck!!

  3. There are some need-based scholarships offered by the major programs such as Aspect, AFS, YFU. However, the cheapest way to go is through Rotary International. However, it is quite competitive. They pay for about everything but your plane tickets and I think even include some monthly spending money.

    Here's some information:

  4. I'm going on one to Paris this summer.

You just have to make payments on time, they're split up into increments so they're a little easier to pay if you choose that option.

Like my first bill was $500

    My second one was $500

    Third one $1,000

    Fourth one $1,000

and my fifth one is going to be a little over $2,000

I hope you go on one(:

    Good luck.

  5. No, not only rich people. I know many exchange students who came to my country and they were from all over the world with different money backround.

You CAN get a scholarship, just apply for one and try it out! Don't just sit there and moan about other people being rich.

Yeah, you have to do some more tests (I mean people won't just give you money for nothing, right?), but it will work. I know man students who come by a scholorship.

Check this site out: http://www.yfu-usa.org/ you'll find a section called "scholorship" under American students (I assume you are from the US?)

    There it stands all.

And please, if you want to, do apply! You can do it! As there are also people applying who don't really need the money, but still do. Just get in contact with any organization (I prefer YFU and AFS).

    Have fun!

  6. No no

there are student exchanges that are for free

like the YES scholarship one, but thats only for people in the middle east. They pay for most of ur expenses including travel tickets and everything. Exchange programs are not only for rich people, and im sure you can find some within your budget if you look hard However, if you want a good one you kinda need to pay some money or get the scholarship, because cheap ones means cheap locations and cheap service. When youre all alone in that country you are going to, you want an organization who will support you and help you  and if you have money that happens.. which is why the rich people go i guess..

but there are ones for free, so as i said in ur other question ask ur councelorr
