My husband is filing for divorce. He brings home roughly 3600-4000 a month. I bring home 1200 a month and am in school for another 2 years, so I'm kinda stuck at that income level for awhile. Will he have to pay alimony? We were married for 5 years.

  1. Ask for it

who was making the most money throughout most of your marriage

if he was then it's possible he will have to pay it

  2. Honestly, I wouldn't ask for his money.  You are really going to have to budget here.  Him giving you alimony will only cause you grief.

You'll get a certain percentage of his income for child support(if it's his child), so that will be a big help, as well as a headache.  But he NEEDS to pay for his child in life.

  3. please reconsider. the divorce rate is too high. remember that men need to be loved and wanted.

he may have to pay you alimony for a little while. i know u r gonna have to ask for it.

  4. In this day and age with women in the workplace, it's not very common to get alimony. It will not be automatically be given by a judge.  He will take into consideration yr age, health, earning potential, and duration of marriage.

You will have to ask for it but don't expect for it to be granted, however, your future ex maybe be agreeable to giving you SOME funds depending on what caused the breakup and his true concern for your welfare. But don't count on it.

  5. No.  You are an adult able to earn your own way. You will get a settlement.  Half the assets accumulated during those five years.
