Can ordinary staples be recycled?

Question

I haven't got a clue what they're made out of... but I figure that if cans and such can be, can staples be, too?

I hate throwing out things that can be recycled.

It depends on who does your recycling.  Some recycling centers have no problem with taking paper that has staples in it, others are a little more picky.  You should call up the information line of yours to see whether staples are a problem or not.

For staples not embedded in paper, though, you should have no problem recycling those.  Most staples are steel, plain and simple.  It will gladly be taken by most recyclers, as metals tend to bring in more money than plastic and glass.

The steel is separated out at the plant.  A large magnetic wheel turns as the mixed recyclables go underneath on a conveyor belt.  The magnet picks up all the steel that passes underneath, and the rest of the mix is left on the belt to be separated elsewhere.  The magnet continues to turn, carrying the metals to another side of the wheel where they are deposited on another belt.  Small staples are easily picked up by this magnetic force.

All elements can be recycled somehow. The problem is, finding someone to do it. All metal and plastics are recyclable but some  take a huge effort to decompile. A television set for example - returning it to its component elements without an huge effort or an effect on the environment is problematic. Staples are fairly simple, but I am uncertain who would accept them.

made out of metal and whilst in my area you cannot put them in a recycling box, you can take them to your recycling centre and put them in the metal container.

I have to commend you on recycling even the smallest things.
