Question:

Can other animals get wet tail?

I bought a hamster on Saturday and took it back to the petstore on Tuesday because it was sick. The store employee told me she had wet tail. I have 2 dogs and a cat and was wondering if they can get it. They never came into direct contact with the hamster. How should I disinfect the cage before I get another healthy hamster?

  1. "Wet tail" is just a symptom.

It can be a sign of bowel upset or stress.

It can be a sign of Tyzzer's disease in rodents (which also affects some other species, but not dogs and cats).

It can be a sign of just about any illness or bacterial infection.

The point is, unless you know the cause of "wet tail" in that individual rodent's case, you won't know if its contagious. You should disinfect the cage and all accessories and throw out unused food and bedding and get new stuff for the new hamster.

  2. it cant spread....but i dont think it happens to cats and dogs ...only to small animals

  3. No, it is species specific.

Pet store hamsters are frequently sold sick. They come from breeding mills.

    Bleach and vinegar.

  4. wet tail is highly infectious diseaous of the bowel assosiated with sudden change of diet / enviroment or high levals of stress

wet tail quickly spreads so make sure you disinfect it properally before the new hamster comes and then rinse the cage with water to get rid of any smell that might stress the hamster :)

i don't think dogs can get it :) or cats

if you want any more info on how to provent wet tail just say and i will add more :)
