Can people, who live in the UK, tell the differences between the different types of American accents?

I, for example, live in the US and I have a hard time differentiating the different types of UK accents.

yupp i can tell if people come from different parts of america though i cant always identify which place it is i notice the differences.

I have never been able to. I can sometimes tell that there is a difference, but still don't have any idea where they come from.

I think that with the coming of television the differences are less than they used to be.

Yeah I can, but only into broad regions like North East / New York, or Chicago or Southerners or Californians!

You'll get the English accents soon enough, they become clear as a bell after a while and you can place someone as either Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, East London or Birmingham in the first couple of sentences.

I have a friend from Portugal who can tell the difference between the accents... not that it counts

Erm I think differing between some areas is difficult but I can tell a distinctive twang from someone down south.

I dont think you would have much trouble in telling the difference between a Welsh man and a English man. Just depends what accent you hear. Some of them are much stronger than others (as is ture in the US I suppose).

Well, I'm American and can usually notice the differences in various American areas. You just have to listen closely and watch for patterns.

So the answer is, some probably can, some may not. But I imagine most UK'ers would have an easier time as we have quite a variety (from Brooklyn to Texan).

Just a guess. We need an Englishman (or woman ) :)
