Can people actually post stuff with royal mail's 1p stamps?

Postie here - yes they can - actually the are recognised as legal tender and if shops accept them they can be used to pay for goods.

Yes.  They are valid postage.  However, it's going to take a whale of a lot of them to post a letter anywhere.  Hope you have a big envelope.
