Can people use visa gift cards to purchase things online?

From what i understand you can use it just as a credit card when shopping on line and when you check out you select Visa as your payment method. The only difference between using a credit card and gift card is that the gift card has a set limit and the purchase will not go through if it is over. Happy shopping.
