The critters are cute, and we even feed the squirrels with corn cob feeders, and the chipmunks grouse on the spilled bird seed from the bird feeders, but they nibble at the tomatoes while they're still green, and they also do a real number on the eggplants. A friend suggested making pepper spray and spraying it on the plants. Anyone have experience with this?

  1. Pepper spray is inhumane.  Not only do some squirrels and chipmunks just get used to the taste especially if they're really hungry but if they get it on their paws and then rub their eyes it's gonna be painful for them. try another corn spike far away from tomatoes.

  2. You can mix one small bottle of hot pepper sauce, one gallon of water and one teaspoon of mild liquid detergent. Some sites claim that home made squirrel repellent is more efficient than any store-bought alternative; in fact, some squirrels have been known to attack plants more aggressively after the application of store-bought repellent.
