Question:

Can pick ups be removed from a wedding dress?

I found a dress I absolutely love. It's "the dress" except for one detail, it has pick ups in the skirt. Does anyone know if those can be removed and if it's a major cost? I haven't found any other dress like it.

  1. if you are ordering the dress it will be made for you, ask the sales woman if you can order it without the pickups.  or else find a really good seamstress that can take the pickups out and alter the skirt, but there might be some damage to the material in the skirt.

  2. Its not usually a good idea to remove pick ups from a dress especially a bridal gown.

Cant you get the dress made without them ?

  3. If you remove them it will change  the shape and length of the dress.

  4. Not without ruining the dress. You'll have obvious flaws showing where the pickups used to be and with special occasion fabric that is used for wedding and bridesmaid dresses, they will stick out even more.

  5. You will ruin the dress if you do. Any seamstress will tell you that. Just get the dress custommade to your specifications.

  6. Unfortunately, removing pickups from a dress is not a good idea.

Basically pickups not only determine the width of the skirt, but they also determine the length.

Without seeing the dress, you have to understand that in today's styles some pickups are done in uniform patterns while others are not.  Some are scattered/random and therefor the skirt width and length are adjusted accordingly.

Also, most pickups are attached with some sort of embellishment or medallion.  In order for the dress to support the extra weight, pickups are usually attached pretty securely.

Not only would your dress look bad if you took them down, chance are good that you'd have a bunch of holes in whatever material the skirt is made out of.

If you like the dress without the pickups, then do what someone else advised and get a custom made wedding gown without the pickups.  This can be done at a reasonable cost and you can get what you really want.  Not settle for something that you dont'!

    Good Luck and Congratulations!
