Question:

Can plastic utensils be recycled?

Sometimes I end up with a plastic fork, spoon, and/or knife after getting take-out from a restaurant. I usually don't use it but I don't feel right just throwing it away. I could probably save it for another use but then I feel like I'm just packing away unnecessary junk. I do recycle plastic bottles, so can I just throw the utensils in with those?

  1. You cannot just throw plastic in recycle bins unless you know the level of plastic that is recycled by the company.  Most areas recycle #1 and #2 plastics, sometimes others,  but you have to check with your recycling service.  I don't believe that utensils are recyclable in standard ways because they are not #1or #2 plastics.  Don't just throw them in if you are not sure.  Think about washing them and reusing.  This website tells you more:  http://www.ehow.com/how_9160_recycle-pla...

  2. Save them and either use them, or collect a bunch and offer them on www.freecycle.org It's a great organization, throughout the world, that helps keep things out of landfills.

If something is useful, or fixable, you'll probably find a taker for it on freecycle.

(You can also ask the take out places not to put them in with your order.)

  3. All plastic is recycleable.  Throw it in with the plastic bottles.

  4. Yes you can...and good of you to think of it!
