Question:

Can playing rented video games hurt your PS2 dvd player?

I had a PS2 and I used the DVD player a lot for movies. Now, I never rent movies, I always buy them so I know they are brand new. However, when I bought my PS2 I rented a couple of video games from Blockbuster. The discs were mildly scratched, but they worked okay. Nothing was on them. Now, my question is can those video game discs affect my brand new discs in any way?

  1. No, a scratched disk wont do anything to a console, computer or anything like that.

  2. No - the pickup does not actually touch the disc, so even if the disc is very scratched, it won't hurt your PS2.

However, if the disc is off-centre, e.g. has a chunk missing or a big sticker on it, the vibrations can damage the motor.

  3. no. no matter how scratched the dvd/cd is, it will never touch any of the reader components (ie lens), so the worst that can happen is that the game console wont read the media.
