Question:

Can poisonous spiders be living in the woodpile I have to move?

I live in Springfield MA, near the Notheast coast. I need to move some logs in the backyard for my dad and they have been there for more than a year. I was scouting out the logs and it seems like a perfect breeding ground for brown recluses. Should I spay down the logs with some sort of spray or bug bomb?

  1. If you want.  You could probably just kick them all over and make sure there's nothing on them.

    But, really, spiders are venomous.

  2. There are likely some spiders in the logs and all are venomous to some extent, not just the two dangerous ones. Just wear gloves while you work. They will protect your hands from the rough wood as well as from spiders and the wood is much more likely to cause damage.

If the logs are for firewood, you don't want the bug spray burning in the fireplace, do you?

  3. I doubt there are any venomous spiders where you live.  If you really want to make sure, call a local state park and ask to speak to their naturalist.

Venomous creatures usually have bright colors.
