Up to 3 times a week scrap metal men ride around our neighbourhood knocking asking for metal. Today I had an old babygate STOLEN from side of my house..the fact of it is they never asked and that could have easily been my bike. Its getting beyond a joke now!

  1. I live in New Orleans and we have a huge problem with that. People steal whole A/C units just to sell the copper in them. They arrest people for that all the time. Tell the police what's going on and they may be willing to patrol the area. Police presence is enough to stop a lot of people.

  2. Yes they can stop them and if you reported them to the Police they would be very interested. i work in a scrap yard and we are visited by the Police everyday due to the increase in scrap theft.

  3. If your property was stolen, a crime has been commited. Ring your local police station (but don't use the emergency number!)

  4. Yes!

  5. We have caught several scrap metal thieves in the past six months, and I work for a small agency.  We got warrants on everybody.

  6. With a massive magnet.

  7. I'm pretty sure the police could at least confront the man for the community. If he constantly knocks on your door asking everyone for scrap metal he could just be doing a good deed, then again maybe not; therefore it could be classified as harassment.

Besides that the fact that he stole something off your property doesn't help his defense either, even if it was a small item. Have you tried confronting this man and asking him to stop? If all else fails the police will probably be there to assist.

  8. In the UK, persons carrying waste material (including scrap) for commercial purposes need a 'Waste Carriers Licence'.

Ask to see his licence and if he is unable to produce one, take his vehicle registation and report him to the Environment Agency.

  9. With the price of base metals going through the roof this is sure to happen , so look on any metal as valuable and treat it as so then you will not lose it . and the police can stop anyone they consider to be  breaking the law , If you report the theft then they are more likely to be stopped
