  1. If a disaster happened at one, like Chernobyl, a lot of radioactive material can escape, which is more lethal than most other things we know. To illustrate, if somebody is standing at a distance of 9 m from a little fresh nuclear waste for 10 minutes, the chance of survival (only) is 50%.

However, with proper management and maintenance, the only routine waste is water vapour, formed during the heating process, which does not cause harm.

  2. It actually depends. Nuclear power plants do pollute. However compared to commonly used alternatives this pollution is minimal. In fact, Nuclear power produces less radioactive materials than a coal power plant and nuclear power plants the radioactive materials can be safely disposed of instead of being released into the air. The first website you found is probably made by someone who does not understand contemporary nuclear power plants and still think all of the nuclear power plants might end up like Chernobyl.
