  1. depends on the horse, they're all different.

  2. yes they can. most people think they cant but i actually know many qh's that can jump really well, i even know a few who are jumping over 3 ft! if this pony is more drafty it could be hard, and also if all he has been taught is western, u'd have 2 train him, but that could be fun. just beware: ponies can be really frustrating!!!

  3. yea most people look 4 qh/tb mix making an apendix qh is good jumper due 2 hind qh muscles you just have 2 teach him..

  4. QH's can jump very well, but like with any other horse, you have to teach them how. Any breed of horse can jump with success - they may not all be able to do 4 feet courses, but 2-3 feet shouldn't be a problem, depending on the horse/pony. I've ridden 13 hand ponies that clear three feet easy.

I currently ride a quarter horse, and he does three foot courses with ease. As I said before, you just have to teach them: they may have a working horse mentality, but they are perfectly able of applying that mental state to jumps rather than cows.

Teaching your western horse will take a bit more work but after a few months, you should have him easily popping over small two foot courses. Start by WALKING him over ONE pole on the ground, and after he's done that, increase the number of poles. Do this SLOWLY, give him his head, and guide him gently over the poles. Once he's mastered this at a walk, pick up a trot and repeat the process - start with a small number of poles and increase it gradually. When your horse is  easily trotting over the poles, you can set up a very small X after the trotting poles, and he should easily pop over that.

Grids (gymnastics) are great for teaching your horse to jump - you can't you expect him to start doing courses right away. If you can, get a riding instructor to help you teach him; if you've never schooled a green horse over fences before, you'll probably need A LOT of help.

Also, if you've never jumped before, you should take lessons on a school horse that knows what it's doing, before you start your own horse over fences. Green on green equals black and blue, if you know what I mean.

    Have fun, :D

  5. Some QHs can jump very well, and some can not.  It depends on the specific horse and not so much the breed.  It WILL require a LOT of training before you can jump him, especially flat work, before you ever try to put him over a jump.  English and Western riding styles require the horse to respond to entirely different sorts of cues.  For jumping, the horse needs to learn to collect himself and work 'on the bit', which is the opposite, really, of what he'll have been taught already.  It will be much like training a horse from the ground up.  Enlist a professional to help you train him to jump properly.  Without proper flatwork training before you try to jump, the horse can injure himself.

Do you mean "Campdrafting"?  Like this: http://www.campdraft.com.au/our_sport.ht... ?  For everyone else, it's an Australian horsesport, involving cutting a steer fromt the herd and guiding it around an obstacle course on horseback.

  6. QHs can jump... but they are probably better for hunter stuff rather than show jumping

  7. working horses and hunter jumper horses have two different mindsets and conformations.working cattle horses are a focus thinking horse that are light on the front and heavy on the rear to allow them to change direction quickly.pony club horses are usually not as light on the front and body position is not as tight and compact.your horse has a job to do and it took a lot of time and effort to learn it to do it well,so in my opinion i wouldnt confuse your horse by trying to teach it to crossover to a new discipline.

1024:i think she meant campdrafting which is a cross between cutting and barrel racing where they cut out a calf and do a barrel patern while keeping the calf from returning to the herd.so it would be like teaching a cutting horse to do hunter/jumper

  8. pretty good

  9. i think these vids might answer your quetion

  10. It really depends on the amount of training and the amount of muscle and their conformation. Generally, the leggier ones have an easier time jumping. If you look at some QH's, like Royal Lark, they were amazing at dressage, and looked like they would be good jumpers. My friend has a QH and she has done 3' 3" easily with her. I don't think they would make it to the Grand Prix level, but they can definitely become good little jumpers.

    Good luck!

  11. i have always liked quarter horses and my friend has one at my pony club and she jumps NSW, Australian pony club C grade jumping. i dont know how ex-cattlers go with it but my other friend has a 14.1 ex-cattler and ive jumped it at about 80 or 90 centimetres and he hasnt done much jumping before but as many other answerers have said it also depends on conformation because if the horse has large bones they can do lots of damage.....

good luck with the new horse

  12. yes there was a qh at rolex this year and that is a **** star event. He actually did pretty well. My friend does high jumpers on a qh and they win all the time on A circuit. I think it really just depends on the horse and not the breed. with the help of a trainer you should teach him to jump very correctly just as you would any other horse and he should be able to go far.

Qh can jump. Some can even jump well. You just have to start them correctly and be open minded. good luck

  13. They are very good at it. I ride a 15.2 hand fleabitten grey QH, we can EASILY jump 3'6"

  14. I have a 15 hand QH that I use to do roping and reighing with but I also use for 3-day eventing. He is an awsome jumper and is always placing in the ribbons.

  15. What is campdrufft?  It sounds like a German word!

QHs aren't really built for, nor were they originally bred for jumping, but sure, they can be taught so long as they are sound.  Many of them do VERY well with it.  It depends on the horse, his conformation and his training.

EDIT:  Ahh, I see!  Thank you John!

  16. See how he jumps before you buy him. My QH can jump over 4 feet, but I'm not that good. Most horses (maybe the exception of minis, but they're pretty good jumpers!) can clear 3ft well enough. Just see how he does before you get him if that's what you really want to do!

  17. I disagree with John.  I think the more things your horse can do, the better that makes the horse.  He will be well-rounded, which will keep him mind more calm.  Plus it keeps it from being bored and sour on one sport (look at those barrel racers that ONLY do barrels...they are nuts).

If you are talking really high levels of competition, I think the breed matters more. There is a reason you see only TBs and Warmbloods in the high levels of jumping.  There is a reason Arabs are endurance champions.  There is a reason QHs are the winners of all the cow events.  But for non-pro levels, I think a QH will be just fine for you.

It also depends on the build of your horse.  Some QHs are SO stocky, they could barely get their body off the ground to clear a jump.  The the "racier" ones are built halfway similar to a TB and are great jumpers.

The people I've trained with here only jump QHs.  I wish I had a picture to share.  Here's a picture...

  18. QH's can jump as good as any other horse, i just depends how you train it, for example Ringwood Jaguar- Australian Stock horse-Went to world equestrian games for eventing, Teddy O Connor-was a small Part shetland!- 4**** Eventing. A QH could jump at pony club easy  :)

  19. Excellent. LMAO
