  1. what is the .... ? I'll ignore it

    2x/5-1=3

    you need to use parans. Is this

    (2x/5) - 1 = 3

    or

    2x/(5-1) = 3

    case 1

    (2x/5) - 1 = 3

    2x/5 = 4

    2x = 20

    x = 10

    case 2

    2x/(5-1) = 3

    2x/4 = 3

    2x = 12

    x = 6

    4j=5(7j-3)=9(j-5)

    two equals signs not allowed.

    -16y--4

    not an equation, can't be solved

    c/7+2=1

    again, two possibilities, too tired to do both.

    .

  2. you need to be more specific with your problems

    1. is it 2x/(5-1)=3 or is it two-fifth times x minus 1 = 3?

    2. Distribute your 5 and 9 to the two terms in the parantheses

    3. What is it equal to?

    4. same thing as 1. is it c/(7+2)=1 or (c/7)+2 = 1?

  3. 1) 2x/5-1=3 ... add one to both sides, 2x/5=4 ... mutliply both sides by 5, 2x=20. therefore x=10

    2) ?? I never had a problem with two equals signs.  I have solved two equations, each that had one equal sign.  Which equation is equal to what?

    3) The equation can be equal to anything - we need an equals sign and a value the expression is equal to.

    4) c/7+2=1 ... subtract 2 to both sides, c/7=-1 ... divide both sides by 7, c=-1/7
