  1. As far as I am aware the Royal Mail hold a monopoly on postal services in th UK. This precludes any other company from setting up or running a letter service. It is possible to run a parcel collection/delivery service (UPS, DHL, etc.)

An Post, the company that run the postal service in the Republic of Ireland, are a private company. In theory they could open an office in Northern Ireland and offer services other than postal services.

  2. Well there is a 'slight' difference between France and both parts of Ireland. There are talks going on at present about mail posted in Derry City to Co Donegal, which is the natural hinterland to the city,(look at a map). This mail has to go to Belfast/Dublin/Co Donegal which takes about 3 days. The traders of Derry want to be able to post mail and have it delivered next day just a few miles down the road.

    So WATCH THIS SPACE!!!

Incidentally we here in Northern Ireland are entitled, in Law, to hold a British AND/OR an Irish passport, so both Post Offices wouldn't be a problem.

  3. Can the republic of ireland open up a post office in france?

    No.

  4. I see no reason why they could not establish a parcel delivery service if they wish but the Royal Mail may still have the legal monopoly on letter service. Perhaps they could open an office to recieve letters for delivery to the republic.

  5. Not back in the day for the same reason a public owned German post office couldnt open one in France. Although now with the power sharing agreement coming close there is no reason why not. This would also be good for competition as the price from royal mail is way above those of an post and the service seems alot better from an post.

  6. it would be a good idea if both companies Royal mail and An Post, could sort something out.

they would have to agree to one price table, the counter staff, would i beleive get confused as they will be dealing in Both Euros and Sterling.

i have family that lives near the broder in the republic, their nearest post office is in the north, they said they go there as its nearer and its cheaper, and they never have any trouble crossing the broder, thers days
