Can saltwater hermit crabs live on land?

I just found a couple of hermit crabs in the water at a local beach can i keep them in a sandy envirement with a hermit crab that i bought or do they need to be kept in salt water?

  1. They will need saltwater, the hermits in my tank never see dry land. In the ocean they will venture to land, but they live in the water.

  3. Yes hermit crabs can definantly live on land but you would need an access to salt water. Get a small dish with very shallow salt water, it should work. They prefer land most of time though.

    You can get marine salt from petstore, on a dish with shallow water, put very little of marine salt in it, about 1/4 of a spoon. (make sure you don't buy aquarium salt, aquarium salt are for freshwater and marine salt are for salt water).
