A purposeful chain.  I am here responding to your question.  Without trying to be glib, right now your purpose is to ask a question.  My purpose is to answer it.  I, like you was a question.  Were, if, and when were we to be?  (Read that again, exactly as I wrote it and think.)  Right now.  The experiment is not scientific, it's philosohpical.  The real question is whether we live as characters in someone's dream, or if we are in reality -- the here and now.  Congratulations, as an amateur philosopher, you have posed the second best conundrum.  The first being, "Can God make a mountain so big he can't move it?"  Both yes and no negate our understanding of God's omnipotence.  

    You are extemely intelligent to even ask that question.
