At a barn nearby, they have 14 horses, and 3 of them are 24 and older. They three are in good health, but obviously old. This lady that boards her horse there always seems to cause drama, and she's done it again. She wants the vet to put-down the 3 older horses, and I am not sure why. Yes, they are old, but no, they are not in any pain, only one has the lightest case of laminitis possible and is on medication. I don't own any of the horses, although I used to lease one. Is there anything I can do? I love these horses, I've been with them and taking care of them for years. I need to do something, I can't find a ood home for them, I've already tried. Please! Is there ANYTHING I can do???

  1. If this is something that must be voted on by the camp board members, then you need to make your case to the other camp board members to see things your way and vote against putting the older horses down.

  2. If they are inn good health most resonable vets will not put a perfectly healthy horse down ^^

  3. is it her horse..?

  4. My neice is a vet tech, has been specializing in equine classes.  Sat. we were talking about abuse or healthy animals being put down.  She said as long as you own the animal, even if it is young & healthy, and want it put down, you have the right to do so.  She also said, if the animal looks to be abused by the vet, & the owner wants it put down, the vet will not put it down, but reports it to the state authorities.  Only way to save them, is to own/buy them from her.  Although any vet can refuse her, eventually she may find one who will.  Contact a lawyer in your state, the first call is free or find one who's first call is free.

I see your edit.  Talk to the other board members, see how many are on your side or hers.  It's sad when they've been used all their lives, then disregarded because people think like her.

  5. Are you saying that there is a camp board, like a kind of political system in a way? Maybe you should make a presentation to them explaining why these horses should be allowed to live their lives out. As long as they aren't in pain, they should be allowed to live. Offer them to a rescue possibly, they can find them a good home.

  6. You can complain to an animal organization.  (like PETA/WWF/SPCA etc)

  7. I know I am going to be tarred and feathered for this but I really feel if nobody wants the horses they should be euthanized. Don't get me wrong I think it's terrible but the chances of these horses finding a good retirement home is slim, chances are they will end up suffering at some stage.

I would prefer to see a healthy horse be euthanized than see it be neglected.

Personally when my horse has to be retired I will pay to have her out at grass with all the routine care she has always gotten for the rest of her days. If that means I can't afford a new horse until she passes that's just fine with me.

  8. Point blank, she's just a boarder. Unless i'm misreading what you've said (meaning that i'm reading it as she boards her horses there, and is not their owner), she can't have the vet put them down.  Sadly, if they are HER horses... you can't do much about it... when it comes down to it, she would have the final say.

Otherwise, if she's just a drama causing boarder, don't worry about it and maybe talk to those horses' owner(s).

  9. well its not write try and talk to her and if its possible maybe you can help with those 3 horses like groom feed ride if there ridable and do whatever to help

  10. Well is the owner of those horses considering putting them down? If this lady isn't the one to own them then they probably won't put them down just because she thinks they should. Usually if horses are in good health their owners will keep them around as long as possible. If you are really concerned just talk to the owner of these three older horses ask them if they are considering it, and if they are give a compelling argument as to why they should let them live. Other than that there isn't anything you can do because if this lady is the owner she has every right to put her horse down if she feels it isn't in good shape. I wouldn't worry if they are healthy because a vet will be reluctant to put it down.

    *Edit*

She really has no say in whether they get put down if she is just on the camp board. She may be able to say that they can't be used in the camp anymore, but it will be the owners decision if they get put down. Most people won't put down a healthy old horse (that they are probably really attached to) just because they can't be used for work anymore. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless the owner starts to seriously talk about it. If you are close to those horses and the owner knows it they will probably let you know ahead of time.

  11. If shes not the owner, then no she can't. If she is the owner then she has the right to do it. (NOT that I agree at all) but animals are considered objects and as long as she is not hurting the animal it wouldn't be call abuse.  Sigh...its hard to swallow.  The only thing you could do to stop it is to purchase the animals from her.  When we would sell older horses, we would make sure that the selling price was greater then the per pound price at the market.  A sad world we live in.

  12. Unfortunatly there is nothing you can really do about it. That lady is just a *****. 24 is not that old. They should probably be retired and live out their days in the pasture until they need to be put down or die naturally. Some people just feel like they dont want to pay the money to keep old horses since they probably dont bring in much revenue. Just pray that her vet has a heart and decides to take a stand and say you DO NOT need to do this.

  13. I don't see how anyone could do that! I just had to put my horse down because she was injured, and she got down in her stall and could not get back up(we tried for 2days to get her up) so to kill them because they are old, Shame on Her!!!

  14. Don't mess with the PETA bunch, they speak with no education on an issue.  Call the SPCA. No horse should be put down without a real good reason.  Education my Friend is the key.    http://www.saferhorseracing.com/gpage1.h...

  15. are you saying that these are camp horses and that she is on the board of trustee? If so...plead your cause with the other board members. Take a petition out. Suggest donating to a therapy program rather than euthanizing them, if they are good condition.

beware of PETA/SHARK organizations...they are terrorist.

  16. If the horses are in good health with proper shelter & access to food & clean water & if the lady who is complaining is just a boarder at the barn where these horses are, then it is none of her business & the horses owner should either tell her to shut up about it or move out is she doesn't like the old horses.

Let the old bird squawk, they are not her horses so she has no say about it.

  17. ask her instead of putting them down to give them away
