Can shooting pool make you smarter?

I have heard playing chess can make you smarter, is the same true for other strategy games like pool?

    Never mind my comments im full of it most of the time anyway but sure it does I think to many people pass up a real good chance to think sometimes -I will agree with every answer so far

    Straight sums it up very well.I would think an added thing his students get is the power to think about pool as well as they learn to play it .Im 60 and im sure he could make me think about things I have overlooked for 55 years .

I think you touched on the answer when you referred to pool as a strategy game.  A good player has their mind actively engaged when they are playing.  They always have a plan.  Good players think at least three shots ahead, sometimes they have the entire table mapped out in their mind.  This is why I believe that in the long run, a smarter player will come out on top over a better shotmaker.  A shotmaker relies solely on their ability to pocket balls to get them by.  A smart, methodical player has a game plan and does everything possible to leave themselves as easy a shot as possible with natural position for the next ball.  The best players can do both.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
