Question:

Can sinus congestion cause tooth problems?

The other day, I had a mild toothache, but it's gone now. Now, I've noticed a couple of other teeth (back molars) are occasionally achy - not enough to take anything for pain though. For the past few days, my sinuses have been very congested and my ears have been hurting and occasionally popping. Can all of this be related? Thank you!

  1. Your sinus cavities lie above your upper teeth. If they're inflamed or if you have a sinus infection then they  can cause toothaches. Take an antihistamine(cold meds) and it should help. However, if it's a sinus infection then you may need an antibiotic from your M.D. Don't worry though, this is very common. Hope you feel better!!

  2. Yes, it can be related. The roots of your upper molars are close to the sinuses, and sometimes, they actually touch the bottom of the sinus, If your sinuses fill up and you become congested, your teeth can be very sensitive and you swear that you have a tooth ache. One way to tell if it is sinus or a tooth problem-lean over and bring your head up quickly. If you feel intense pressure over your sinuses, then it is likely a sinus problem and not a tooth problem. Also, if you take sinus headache meds and it clears up the discomfort, that is your answer as well.

  3. Sinus pressure can make your teeth hurt... you may also have an ear infection or a sinus infection.

If you have an abscess or an infection in your gums,

it could also lead to other problems, like bad cold symptoms.

You should probably go to your general doctor and explain

your symptoms.  Then go to your dentist and ask for a check-up

    and teeth cleaning.

  4. Absolutely.  The nerves run all the way through your face.  Could be TMJ or just a sinus infection.

  5. Yes more than likely it is all related, but you should have your teeth checked out if this continues or doesn't go away once your sinuses have cleared up.

    They are all connected.
