yes. Skype is free while "calling" other Skype users. it is like a web call. It is also free for 1800 calls. You will however need to collect "Skype points" to make regular calls. these can be purchased through Skype. I have received 60 mins free cards at the library of a local school. It was a promotion and mainly for the foreigners wanting to call home for free.

I use Skype religiously as my regular line. We still have a regular house phone but that grandma uses to call around on. Skype is my preferred method now. There is no 911 dialing with skype but you can take it with you anywhere !
