  2. Dear Luv,

Thank you for asking your question here at Yahoo! Answers.  It is always exciting to find people who are interested in learning more about their family history.

I was able to locate Monona on a 1920 Census as a 2 year old child, living with her parents Fred and Hattie.  I found the family again in the 1930 Census.  (This is kind of neat as it shows that she likely named her son after her father.)  All have Michigan listed as their birthplace.

Edward could prove to be a little more difficult since his name is much more common.  For example - there are 26 boys named Edward Gates that are about the right age in the 1920 Census.  Figuring out which one is him would require locating an obituary, death certificate or other family document that identifies the names of his parents.  You might also consider ordering a copy of Social Security Application form as that likely includes parents' names as well.

If you would like copies of the two census records containing details about Monona and her parents, please respond privately with contact information and I will forward them on to you.

your first stop is the local newspaper.. send a letter to the editor by email, and check how to access an obit for Fred, with that death date.  Either they have their archives or the local library would.  IF there is an obit (some people don't have them), it may list the parents, or other persons you can contact (family).

The other option is Fred's death certificate. You don't mention how you are connected to him.. the death cert might be restricted to proven family members.

Since Fred was born 1941, that is too recent to find him in the 1930 census (most recent one open to searching). Once you find the parents, they would be searchable.
