Irene Murdoch petititoned all levels of government in order to get a share of the property her husband and herself had built up for over 25 years before divorcing.  The divorce was on grounds of spousal abuse.  Her actions eventually reached the supreme court, where the law regarding women's property rights upon a marital dissolution was changed in order for women to get a share of properties accumulated during a marriage.  I'm not sure what other points can be made, as this was her major contribution to Canadian history.
