Can some one help me with this math problem?

I keep trying to work it out and all my answers come out wrong. I double check my work and everything I do is still wrong.

If you can show how you solved it in steps I'd appreciate more than you'll know.

  1. 2(x - 4) = 3 - 5(2x + 1) - Original Problem

    2x - 8 = 3 - 10x + 5 - First simplify by multiplying 2 with each number in the parentheses and the same on the other side with 5

    2x - 8 = 3 - 10x + 5 - Then add 8 to both sides

        +8    +8

    ________________

    2x = 3 - 10x + 13 - Add 10x to both sides to put the 2xs together

    10x      +10x

    ________________

    12x = 3 + 13 - Add 3 and 13

    12x = 16 - Divide both sides by 12

    ___   ___

    12      12

    x = 16/12 or 1&4/12 which equals 1&1/4

    Hope this helped! Good luck!!

  2. distribute and combine like terms

    2x-8=-10x-2

    +10x  +10x

    12x-8=-2

    +8       +8

    12x=6

    /12   /12

    x=.5

    i checked it on a calculator and both sides equal -7

    hope this helps!

  3. 2x-8=3-10x-5 ( i distributed the 2 on the right hand side and -5 on the left hand side)

    12x=6( i just add 8 on both sides and 10x on both sides. then i simplified them.)

    x=1/2( i divided 12 on both sides)

  4. 2x-8=3-10x-5

    -2x        -2x

    -8=3-12x-5

    +5         +5

    -3=3-12x

    -3 -3

    -6=-12x

    -6/-12  -12x/-12

    .5=x

  5. okay, it's been years, but no one else has taken a stab so...

    First, parenthesis. Solve what's in the parenthesis first. That gives you:

    2x - 8 = 3 -10x -  5  (negative five because a neg five times a pos 1 is a neg)

    Now, get all the x's on the same side. Since you've got a negative 10x on the right, I'd move it to the left. It's always easier to move negatives because that way they turn positive. You're adding it to both sides to remove it from one. So that leaves you:

    10x + 2x -8 = 3 - 5

    Add what you can:

    12x -8 = -2

    Move the negative 8 by adding positive 8 to both sides:

    12x=6

    Multiply each side by 1/12 to isolate the X. You should have left, x=1/2

    (lowest common denominator.)

  6. Distribute the 2 to both terms in parentheses on the left:

    2x - 8 =5 - 5(2x+1)

    Distribute the -5 to both terms in parentheses on the right:

    2x-8=5-10x-5

    The +5 and -5 on the right cancel each other out

    2x-8=-10x

    Add 10x to both sides:

    12x-8=0

    Add 8 to both sides:

    12x=8

    Divide both sides by 12:

    x=(8/12)

    Put the fraction in lowest terms:

    x=2/3

    _/

  7. simple

    remember your order of operations and other rules of mathematics.

    First multiply the quantity inside the parenthesis by the number outside the parenthesis, don't forget about that negative sign.

    ((2)x-(2)4) = 3 + ((-5)2x) + (-5)1)

    (2x-8)=3+(-10x+(-5))

    you can now drop the parenthesis because you have no more operations to apply to the group inside the parenthesis.

    2x-8 = 3-10x-5

    the three and the five are both on the right side of the equation, and do not have a variable, so combine them by "addition" (3+(-5))

    2x-8 = -10x - 2

    combine like terms on each side (pull anything with an x on the left, and anything without on the right).  Do this by subtracting from both sides.

    12x = 6

    divide both sides by 12

    x=6/12

    simplify

    x=1/2

    you're done.

  8. 2x - 8 = 3 - 10x - 5,

    2x + 10x = 3 - 5 + 8,

    12x = 6,

    x = 1/2

  9. basic algebra.  if you understand this and can put it to use, you're well on your way.

    rule 1: you multiply everything inside the parentheses by the multiplier.  thus 2x-8 = 3 - 10x + 5

    rule 2:  what you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other as well.  thus, to get all the x's on one side:

    add 10x and 8 to both sides: 12x = 16

    then solve for x by dividing both sides by 12: x - 1.333
