Why is it necassary to have regulary spaced gaps between sections of a concrete sidewalk?

    i have always wondered why people eat many diff kinds of food...idk why its a wierd thought ...to wierd for here

  3. I'm agreeing with the last two (contraction and expansion), but have an interesting aside... I'm originally from Minnesota where it is SO COLD in the winter and pretty hot in the summer.  On bridges, they have rubber gaps between chunks of concrete so that the bridge can expand and contract as the weather changes.

    2. expansion joints; concrete needs room to breath as temperature changes without the designated gaps it would crack sporadically
