  1. The previous answers are all correct, but I would like to add one thing. Division III football players are not allowed to redshirt.

  2. Hello....Every college freshman athlete has the option of "redshirting" for one season....That means they can workout and settle into college life for that year without dressing for games and being an official member of the team....They do NOT use up a year of eligility and have 4 years left after that season....After that season is used up - they are referred to as a "redshirt freshman" the following season....

  3. Means you're on the team but won't play...sidelined, benched...

  4. It simply means that your eligibility is being saved for the current year. You are on the team, you will practice with the team, maybe dress for home games, but you will not travel with the team, and you will not play in any games for the year.Every college freshman athlete has the option of "redshirting" for one season....That means they can workout and settle into college life for that year without dressing for games and being an official member of the team....They do NOT use up a year of eligility and have 4 years left after that season....After that season is used up - they are referred to as a "redshirt freshman" the following season....

  6. In college football, if you play in more than a couple games during a season, your eligibility is used.  If you do not play, but practice with the team, you are said to be "redshirted".  Why do teams/players use this option?  Let's say you're knee-deep in talent at QB, but can't use everyone this year.  You might redshirt a player to preserve more eligibility for future years.

The practice was invented to protect people who were injured from losing a year of eligibility, simply because they moved forward academically (year of school).  It allows athletic eligibility and academic grade to be separate, protect player eligibility.  You'll note that in practice today, players who are not to be "hit" or "tackled" wear red shirts.  This is to protect them from injury.

A "redshirt" freshman would most often be someone who is a sophomore academically, but a freshman in terms of athletic eligiblity.
