Can some one suggest how to spend 2 1/2 days at Rome?

last year i was 2 days in rome.

landed and took the bus to the city center,termini.

everything is in walking distance.... take at least one day to check out the colosseum, roman forum, pantheon, piazza di venezia, piazza di spagna, fontana di trevi etc. circus maximo    

one day for the vatican city it will take you all day to look at everything in there....

and the half day just to relax and go to places you have missed.....

we just bought a map and started walking,,it is very walk friendly over there and you get to see a whole lot that way.

go to this site -- it may seem like i'm not responding directly but i find this site the best for basics.  you can pick & choose what you want to do.  it has many categories broken down  it's very simple.

i used one of their guides for budapest & found it pretty good.  have fun!!

Don't forget Gianicolo, a beautiful hill  over Vatican.

It's full of historic memories of battles (you know Garibaldi?) for italian unity. There is a very beautiful landscape , you can see Rome until Colli Albani.

Go see the Tower of Pisa, the Coliseum, the Arch of Constantine, the Catacombs of Rome, the Pantheon, and the Pyramid of Cestius.

Ok first day go to see St. Peter's Basilica (basilica di San Pietro) and Vatican museums (very famous for Sistine chapel)...second day Colosseum and then go around the City Centre( Piazza di Spagna,Via Condotti,Via del Corso) and also go to see the Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II or "Altar of Fatherland", (Altare della Patria). Last 1/2 day go to see Saint Angelo Castle(Castel Sant'Angelo).

It is not easy task.

Do not try "Go see the Tower of Pisa", it is in totally different part of the country.

Do a lot of walking, Rome is very friendly walking town (with exception of Vatican city).

Grab good map of Rome,B&N has good selection.

I just got back from Rome on Monday.  Was there for 5 days.  There's alot to see in 2 1/2 days.  I'd recommend taking one of the open air busses such as Ciao Roma.  You can get on and off at the different sites and they take you all over.  If you want to see the inside of the Vatican, arrive early.  The lines get long quick.

Get a good map.  Alot of the sites are within walking distance.

I'm not sure how much you want to do each day, but if you want to pack as much in as possible, then try to see sites close to each other each day. I would recommend going to the Colessum and the Roman Forum.  They are right next to each other, so you would get to see two cool places at one time and depending on how long you want to spend there, you even have time to go someplace else the same day.  One place that I would recommend seeing is the Pantheon.  I was very impressed with that.  Also the Trevi fountain (make sure you throw a coin in it), the Spanish Steps, and the Via Venetto are withing walking distance from each other.  If you are going to the Vatican, you could make a day of the area, because there are long lines to St. Peter's Basillica, the Vatican museum,  and the Sistine chapel.  Also there are lots of little shops and places within walking distance of there too.

If you want to pack in as much as possible I would recommend  having tour appointments, especially at the Vatican to limit the time spent in lines.  There are several reputable guided tour groups that can take you pretty much anywhere you want to go in the city.  

BEWARE of the gypsies.  They will be anywhere that there are a lot of tourists.  They are there to pickpocket you, and they are good  at their job.  Wear a hidden travel belt to keep your money and valuables in.

I know it sounds cheesy, but take the 110Trambus.  When I was in Italy it cost 13Euro.  It stops at close to or near all the major sites.  You can get on and off all day and way into the evening.  Just make sure you get up early and take the very first bus.  When we went I believe the first departure was at 9 am.  

Another thing you have to see is Testavere.  It's a great neighborhood with fabulous restaurants.  There is also this great flea market there that sells everything from knockoffs to suits.
