  1. Bringing Cats and Dogs and other pets to Australia

Cats and dogs entering Australia must meet all of the AQIS import conditions prior to export. This is to ensure no exotic diseases are introduced into Australia. Australia is free from many animal-related diseases found in other parts of the world.

If you wish to import a cat or dog into Australia, you need to apply for an AQIS import permit via the Live Animal Imports Program. AQIS officers will assess the application and – provided that the animal meets the import permit requirements – grant an import permit.

An import permit is required to book a space at an AQIS post-arrival Animal Quarantine Station. There are three post-arrival Animal Quarantine Stations for cats and dogs in Australia – Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

Different import conditions apply for the importation of disability assistance dogs.

The import conditions applicable for pets other than cats and dogs can be viewed through the following link; other pets.

Select the country you intend to export the cat or dog from below to download a detailed information package containing the relevant quarantine requirements, fees, import permit application form and the steps involved throughout the entire import process.

If the country is not listed below the direct importation of cats and dogs from that country into Australia is not permitted as the disease or risk status is considered to be too high. Refer to Category 6 – all other countries for more information.

    Taking Your Dog or Cat

In most cases, the importation of dogs and cats is subject to strict rules and quarantine periods, set by AQIS. The procedure for dogs and cats is outlined below and the full information package can be found on the AQIS link below.

Confirm eligibility of your pet - for example, some breeds are banned.

Dogs and cats must have a microchip.

Apply for a Permit to Import.

If approved, AQIS issue a permit, which contains the veterinary certificates to be completed and instructions on how to proceed.

Book Quarantine Accommodation - there are quarantine stations in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne and demand for accommodation can be high.

Locate a Government Approved Vet in your home country.

Make Travel Arrangements for your pet.

Obtain general vaccinations, such as distemper and kennel cough.

Obtain a blood test (for dogs).

Parasite treatment - within 4 days of export.

Completion of Veterinary Certifcate A - within 4 days of export.

Completion of Veterinary Certifcate B - usually on day of departure.

Check Pet in with the airline.

    Quarantine

The time in quarantine varies according to the country of origin; eg. no quarantine from New Zealand, 30 days from UK, 210 days from South Africa.

Quarantine Stations only exist in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne and there can be high demand for accommodation in these stations.

You are responsible for daily accommodation fees for your pet while in quarantine, plus a number of additional fees such as airport pickup, vet inspections and so on.

For more details on all of the above, check the Bringing Cats and Dogs to Australia guide on the AQIS website.

    The Cost

Be prepared - bringing a dog or cat to Aus costs much more than a standard airline ticket for anyone else in the family. The cost depends on the size of the dog (not for cats unless they are abnormally large), the length of time in quarantine and whether there are any additional, unforeseen vet bills.

As a guide, expect from about £1500 GBP (2,973.01 USD) for a small breed (eg. Jack Russell) up to £3500 GBP ( 6,937.01 USD) for a large breed (eg. German Shepherd). Then, quarantine costs in Aus should be around $800 AUD (768 USD) for a 30 day quarantine.

  2. Pitbulls are banned in Australia

    see this link

  3. No, you cannot bring a Pit Bull into this country.

There is an Australian Federal Law which bans the importation of Pit Bull Terriers and 3 other breeds into Australia.

The breeds prohibited for importation by the Australian Government.

These are as listed in the Customs Regulations:

    a)     American Pit Bull Terrier or Pit Bull Terrier

    b)     Japanese Tosa

    c)     Dogo Argentino

    d)     Fila Brasileiro

Here in Queensland, it's against the law to own one.

They are totally banned from the state.

If a person did have one it would be seized by the authorities and euthanised, by law.

  4. You could bring your dog from the US to Australia but there is a lot of red tape to go through.  You would have to apply through the government for a special import licence and then get tests and the dog would have to spend some time in quarantine.  More information at the government website http://www.daff.gov.au/aqis/cat-dogs

  5. We don't allow the sort of people who own pit bulls.  Sorry.

  6. Unfortunately not.

Not allowed to bring any fresh food or animals.
