Can some people who manage online groups or chat rooms answer a question for me?

Why do most online group moderators have a problem with people placing their own group in their signature line? I understand if someone bombarding their group with unwanted requests for others to join the other group, but if it is not obnoxiously in a signature line- but nicely with a regular font- what is the problem? Are they afraid that someone might like the other group more?

  1. I don't mind it at all. In fact I have even encouraged people to use my group to seek members for their own group. My groups are alumni groups, so my purpose for doing that is to assist in individual class activities.

  2. some owners view it as advertising and off topic, and so would I. you at least should ask owners if they're ok with the signature before posting it. I wouldn't have group just so a member can spam my members with their own groups. but that's just me. there are other ways to advertise your group, and my members aren't in my group to be searching for other groups. everyone knows where to surf if their interested in other groups.

  3. I've allowed the odd post where people announce their group.  As long as it isn't a competing group I care less.
