I need to pick an athlete from the olympics and i picked michael phellps. I need to find how fast he swims. His first race was last night, and he did 400 meters in 4 minutes and 3 seconds. My teacher said you have to divide the distance in meters by the seconds and you get the mph but i kept getting weird answers on my calculator. Can some1 plz help give me the answer or explain? Thanks

  1. Perhaps your first error is that you might not have converted it from meters to miles (assuming mph refers to miles per hour, not meters per hour).:

Here is the math I did

    1) converted the meters to miles and the min to seconds

So he did .2485 miles in 243 seconds

    2) converted it into miles per second

    .2485/ 243= .001022 miles per second

    3) The I multiplied it by 60 for miles per min=. 061358

    4) Then Multiplied it by 60 again for miles per hour.

My answer was 3.681 miles per hour.

    Cheers!
