Can somebody explain me how the kinetic theory explains diffusion and how a solid dissolves in a liquid?

  1. kinetic theory makes several basic assumptions, one of which is that all particles are in constant random motion.  This assumption is made so that we can use statistics (averages) to describe the overall state of the particles in a substance (this way we can say that there are equal numbers of particles moving in the x, y, and z directions at the same time).

    using this assumption, due to constant random motion, the particles would have to eventually move down a concentration gradient (the definition of diffusion).
