I think you are talking about a wind tunnel. Its a large tube with a very powerful fan at one end used to check the streamlining of vehicles, planes etc.  They switch on the fan and use coloured smoke to see the currents created when the wind passes over the body of the vehicle.

its a tunnel that you go through on a train so you speed way up to shorten the trip.

isn't a speed tunnel like a wind tunnel. they test a car for its speed and aerodynamics using a range of formulas. just an idea. looked on internet but didn't have a good search. however this is the general idea I got back.
