Can somebody explain to me what exactly is a "draft" and what's going on with Favre at the moment?

I'm Irish, been following NY Giants in the football for the past 2 years but I'm still not sure what's a 1st, 2nd draft etc?? and what's the story with Brett Favre at the moment?! These questions might sound really thick but I'm completely unfamiliar with the concepts..

Yes, a draft is an annual event where each NFL team has around 7 selections to choose from the best college players in the country. Each team has a selection in each round, unless the picks are traded. The Packers recieved a second round draft pick, meaning the second time the Jets would select a player, the Jets will now recieve that selection. The story with Favre is that he is now a Jet because he originally decided to retire, but came back wanting to play for the Packers. The Packers did not want him because they were getting tired of him taking several months to decide whether or not he will stay or retire the last few years. So they decided to deal him to the Jets so they would not have to play against him during this season

a draft is when all of the professional football teams choose new players out of college who they would like to be on their team. Brett favre retired after the 07 season and recently told the packers that he wanted to return,but they did not want him back and actually offered him money to stay retired. He was just a few days ago traded to the new york jets for future draft choices.
