Can somebody please advise me on how to clean the mud off my books?

I have some books that are very precious to me and unfortunately they were dropped in mud.

You got an excellent answer from #1. A second suggestion for you is to use a stamp blotter book. When postage stamps are soiled or damaged, you soak them in a fluid and then use a special blotter pad to dry them. The blotter pads are cheap. The only problem you may run into and this is a serious consideration, is the type of ink used. You'll have to test a page, if you go this route, to see if the ink smears or runs. It's hard to say, shooting from the hip. Do your best.

Let them dry thoroughly and then when the mud becomes hardened, gently dust it off the pages and covers.
