Hi, I'm new to ice skating and I was wondering how you do the half flip and toe loop..I began working on them recently and I sort of know how to do them but not completely. I know there is a big difference between them but I don't really understand, so can someone please explain the difference and how you do each jump? Especially the entry? Also, when you land the half flip, how do you land? On one foot or both?

Thank you in advance :)

  1. The biggest difference between the jumps is the edge that you take off from - I know they are toe jumps, but you begin on an edge.  I will explain in left handed terms.

Toe loop - you do a left inside 3-turn with your free leg stretched out behind you.  After the turn, bend your skating knee and tap the toe pick of your right skate into the ice (that leg should be straight). Then you kick your left leg through like a waltz jump and land backwards on your left back outside edge.

1/2 Flip - you do a right outside 3-turn with your free leg stretched out behind you. After the turn, bend your skating knee and tap the toe pick of your left skate into the ice (that leg should be straight). You then lift your right leg by bending the knee as you rotate and do kind of a bunny hop onto your right toe and then step forward onto your left inside edge for the landing. The 1/2 flip is the harder one to explain.

    Hope this helps!

  2. For left-handed!

    1) Half-Flip: You start with a left mohawk, take off with your left toe pick, and jump around half a rotation so that you land forward. When you land it should sort of a bunny hop, so you come down on your right foot, then push off of it to your left leg and glide forward. So you land on one foot.

    2) Toe Loop: Start with a left inside three-turn take off with your right toe pick, rotate once in the air, and land gliding backwards on your left outside edge.

  3. I don't remember the half flip.

The toe loop is (if your right handed) you start on your right foot and you do a three turn, then you dig your left toe pick into the ice and swing your right leg around up and out completing a half turn and landing backward on your right foot.

the flip jump is where you start on your left foot, do a three turn. dig your right into the ice and make a complete turn landing on your right foot.

sorry i could show you a lot better than i can tell you.
