  1. I just looked at the rules from the WPA and it said no, and that is how I always played it.

  2. Depends whether you are playing "league" rules or "bar" rules.

League rules say you have ball-in-hand anywhere on the table an may shoot at any ball on the table.

Most bar rules say you have to take the cue ball behind the second diamond on the rail, (sometimes known at pip) and can shoot only at balls past the imaginary line.

Hope this answers your question. Good luck.

  3. I don't know where these people are getting their rules, but you're pretty much all wrong.

If you want to play 8 ball correctly, you should use World Standardized rules, which are those posted by the BCA and WPA websites. These rules state that when someone commits a foul (including scratching) their opponent may place the ball ANYWHERE on the table, and shoot at any of their balls. This is referred to as "ball in hand." The only exception to this rule is if a player scratched on the break, in which case the incoming player must place the cue ball behind that headstring, and may not hit any of the balls behind that line first.

The only set of rules that will tell you the the cue ball goes behind the headstring after a scratch are 'bar' rules. Most people play by bar rules, but this is mainly due to ignorance. Bar rules are inconsistent from place to place (good luck finding a set of "bar" rules written down, because they do not exist), and they leave huge holes in a game that hinder serious competition. I cannot tell you definitively that you cannot hit balls in the kitchen when playing bar rules, and neither can anyone else. This is because people use whatever rules they happen to think are correct, whether they were told them or made them up.

So if you want to play 8 ball correctly, go to the WPA's website and learn the correct rules. Otherwise, whatever rules you like are fine, just make them up as you go. That's the motto of bar rules players.

  4. Some people play yes you can, because it is considered a foul and you get ball in hand, depends on what rules you play with. There are two main governing bodies in America, and some people use some rules from one body, and some from the other, Rules on shooting the eight should be made understood between the people playing. and usually that's all that matters. Rules on scratches, and other questionable,

situations should also be discussed if there are any questions.

  5. Im not sure of the question, but I think you mean after a person scratches, can they shoot back behind the second pip at their balls?

    No.

After a scratch, the cue ball must be placed behind the second pip (the little white mark on the sides of the tables) from the side where the break took place.

Any balls behind that pip can not be shot at, any balls forward of that pip can be shot at.

This is normal rules for 8-ball.  There are variations that state you can have "ball-in-hand", though, that will allow you to shoot at any ball on the table, and you are able to place the ball down anywhere on the table.

I hope that is the answer you were looking for.

  6. the first player to putt a ball will have to shoot all of its types. for example i putt a seven ball, and i'll have to shoot all the full solid balls - 1 to 6. 8 ball is the last

  7. OK go with Matt on this one

  8. in australia you can

i used to play knockout nights at the pub

and i used to umpire the games

so yes u can shoot backwards.

intresting to note they have gotten rid of the "D" now and u can shoot from behind the line in any direction u like
