Can somebody please tell me the condition of present-day India?

Indian friends who live and work here tell me that big cities like Bombay are thriving ultra-busy places with huge financial deals occuring every day.

But there is a dark side as well. The wretched poor who live and die on the street are still a constant situation.

To understand India with a population THREE times that of the U.S.A you first have to know that it is the world's largest democracy (not hard line like China) but the one drwaback is the retention of the CASTE SYSTEM which keeps about 1/4 of the population in poverty.

Meanwhile most of the country is well educated. The country is rich in resources and manufacturing. Education is free and with high standards.

India has nuclear power, is a friend to the U.S. but is wary of its neighbor Pakistan.

And some areas in India (like Kashmir) is so destitute that the average annual income is less than $1000.

India is a complicated mosaic with 70 official languages and cultures running from opulent to poverty-stricken.

It would be impossible to give you a general answer to your question because India is a vast country of contrasts.

One friend of mine from Madras said that 20 miles away from his town the language was so different he could not understand it.

How different in America where someone in Maine could fly to California and feel right at home with his language or life style.

You have asked an interesting question.

Incidentally when India was a British colony it was considered to be the "Jewel of the Crown".
