I have read all the Stephen King books and I think the scariest ones are 'IT' and Carrie and Bag of Bones.

Try some of James Herbert's books.  He is the best horror writer around at the moment in my opinion.  His books can be quite dark and twisted but they are genuinely good & creepy horror novels.

He wrote a trilogy of books about Rats & they are probably some of his most chilling novels.  They are called 'Rats', 'Lair' & 'Domain'.

I found 'Domain' to be the most creepy of the three novels because it is set in London in the aftermath of a nuclear attack & while the idea of bloodthirsty mutant rats might not sound very plausible - the events following the nuclear attack are very scary because they really are quite plausible.

'The Ghosts of Sleath' is very good and very chilling - at one point when I was reading this book I actually shivered with fear.

'The Fog' is also very good but one of the more twisted of James Herbert's novels.

'Once' is a bit off the wall - it's about evil fairies, goblins & sprites.  It's like the antithesis of a fairytale.

'Haunted' is the first novel I read by James Herbert and one of my favourites.  It's almost like an old fashioned ghost story in a huge haunted house.  It's excellent.
