My mother is going away for 2 weeks with my grandmother to Vietnam, and she asks me what she should buy as a gift when she comes back, can you please tell me what they have over there? Thank you if you do tell me. I appreciate it.

  1. they have a huge variety of souveniers and goods and i've purchased a lot.... wooden boxes are cheap and very pretty BUT THEY ALL CRACK WARP OR COME APART COMPLETLY... dont buy them at any price.. they have a large variety of ladies hand bags.. all beautyfull some hand stiched some done buy machine[ you can tell if you look closely at the stiching which is which.] they also have pretty shoes for woman, cheap  but she should bring a pattern for sizing if the shoes are for someone else.  framed stich art is abondant and comes in a wide range of quality and prices.. the real nice stuff is expensive by any standard.. but if you look around you can find some nice souvenier quality very cheap.. especialy in ha noi.   jewlery is also very nice put the price of gold lately makes it prohibative. most of the elder woman in viet nam wear colorfull pant/ tunic outfits[ they are modernazations of the old "black pajamas" worn during the war years, they are called "ao ba ba", very comfortable and cheap and can be custom made in any tailor shop.. they make for comfortable wear in asia and gorgeous pajamas back here...

  2. the brand stuff like guess, gucc. LV... are fake...try chinese brand like converse sneaker>>>not sure it great quality

jeans fade color..after u put in a washing machine

    ....cotton shirt shrink..

    buy snacks...ok..i have no ideas..

  3. Like that girl Nisky_Daisy said... And also wood pictures like the guy above me said.

Souvenirs stuff that made from cocnuts are also something you might wanna consider. Postcards are nice too.

  4. I agree with the earlier poster: give your mom your measurements for some lovely, inexpensive tailored clothes, especially in silk.  They can pick out a fabric, pass on your measurements and the next day, one of Vietnam's expert tailors will have produced a lovely dress or skirt or whatever you like.

Also very nice are lacquered goods, like vases or other pieces of interior design.

A little off-topic, I've found that for a "communist" country, I've never seen a society more willing to sell things.  Everything is for sale in Saigon: EVERYTHING.  That includes cheap knockoffs of western goods, pirated DVDs for $1 each or less, and even less savoury options: drugs and prostitution are pretty much everywhere.  That's the downside of rampant development: certain "industries" really profit from the money being spent.

  5. Fake Louis Vuitton, Guess, Coach handbags and stuff.

They're so cheap... Like 10-25 bucks, depends on what store you go to.

  6. I have been to a bunch of countries and usually what I would recommend is what I regret I didn't buy (or get more of).

In Viet Nam tailored clothing is one of the best deals.  Guys can get a suit for $100 and women bought gowns (like a prom dress!) for about $80.  These prices could easily have been on the high side too!!  I bought some silk kimonos for $15 each.  They are pretty high quality and sell for much more in the US.

I would recommend giving her a list of your top 20 favorite movies.  She could probably get you all of them in an afternoon's shopping trip for less than $2 each.

Please Please... don't ask your poor mother to try to bring agricultural products into your home country.  She won't appreciate the hours she spends messing around in customs.

  7. Try the vietnamese noddle soup.

    in vietnamese its called "Pho"

  8. Haha it's no use even if we tell you what your mom should get for you.  Once she's there, trust me, she'll attempt to buy anything!  The price there is unbelievable when you compare to the price here.  I went to vietnam last year in Oct. and believe it or not, it cost me less than 10 dollars usd for a lunch with 10 people.  In case you're curious what i got for lunch, here is it - Wine, soft-drink, hotpots stuffs.. and alot more!  Things are cheap there and it definitely worth taking a trip there!

  9. I have two pcs. framed pictures of vietnamese scenery made of wood. all of it is made of wood. the pictures are carved out along the natural colors of different varieties of  wood. its amazing. originally vietnamese.

  10. Petroleum, garments, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, footwear, rice, and electronic products.

  11. I really don't know but it'll be pretty much what they have here only with a lot more scarcity. They're still trying to build something of an economy and a market out there, y'know. It doesn't happen overnight.

  12. Silk Scarves are a nice gift and very reasonable.  Good gift for the ladies.  The Instant NesCafe Vietnamese Coffee is delicious and also a good reasonable gift to guys and gals. My Vietnamese Mother in Law and I enjoy a cup most every morning.  Cheers

  13. bicycle inner tubes that's all i know

  14. I am living in Vietnam now. If you want to have a nice present from your mother, you can choose clothe and some kinds of souvenir in Old Quarter in Hanoi. Or some kind of fruit that is very special in Vietnam in Southern Area in Vietnam. Really good and delicious.

Hope that you will enjoy your presents

  15. Friends who have visited have come back with great tailor made clothes.  You could give your grandmother your measurements and she could take them to a tailor and bring back some beautiful custom-made garments for a very reasonable price.

  16. HANDICRAFT

  17. Look in a fashion magazine and find a dress you really love but can't afford and send this with your measurement with your mother and the exact replica will be yours for a small price. You can buy anything you want in Vietnam for a price, a very low price. They have a lot of copies there. Think of something and I'm sure you can get it.

  18. A bottle of Coca-Cola.
