ciccio means "chubby" but in a nice way, like a cross between "chubby" and "buddy" . I grew up in Italy, and someone mentioned a doll called "ciccio bello" which literally means chubby and beautifull. That is what we nicknamed my son because he looked just like that doll!!! Also, I have never heard it used for Francesco, i have heard of Chicco, checco, and cisco.

As said it depends by the contest and the region. Sometimes it means "d**k", in a friendly way, trying not to be offensive. Althought it is rare, if you say ciccio meaning d**k, everybody would understand...

I am updating this (Sunday March 4) as I asked a bunch of Italian friends in Florence today about this word again - they insist it only means "friend" or "dear friend" and/or "chubby friend"  - no one said it is a diminutive of Francesco.  They also insisted it does not mean "d**k" or has any negative connotations - it is a sort of term of endearment and affection. I think it is hard to translate literally in English because males usually do not address each with affection in a hello or greeting in English. I guess a lot of it has to do with where you come from.

I was told by Italian friends that it also means "meat" - but depending on where you are from, not in a nice way perhaps (as the other answerer alluded to). For instance, a gentleman in Florence told me he would never use this word to describe anything, but it would be more common in the countryside. I also think that Italian school kids may call each other "ciccia" or "ciccio" to mean something akin to "fatso" in English.

The infamous butcher Dario Cecchini has a restaurant  in Panzano called "Solo Ciccia" - meaning "Only Meat".

it could be short for Cicciobello.it was a famous type of Doll(boy doll).sometimes i use it as a nickname to mean cicciobello,my doll, saying that the person is cute and adorable.

or it could be short for cicciolotto,or cicciabomba...meaning you a bit chubby, but still in a nice way.

it really could mean lots of different things,and it depends on how it is used and by who (it depends on what region you are from).

Do not use "ciccia" as a diminutive of Francesca or the Francesca you are calling that will kick you.....Although it is a nick name for Francesco, it doesn't work for the female version of the name. "ciccia" means "meat", as children use the word, but it also means "fat" ("ho messo su un po' di ciccia" means "I've gained some weight").

It doesn't really have an accurate translation in English. It is used sometimes as a diminutive of the name Francesco. Otherwise, it is used as a generic nickname in an endearing, fun or sarcastic way. For example, "Senti ciccio..." would translate sort of like "Listen buddy...", in the sarcastic sense.
