  1. try the link i posted, they have a utility that tells u the maximum RAM your computer takes, how many slots u have and how many slots are being used.  so if your computer has 4 slots and u are using 2 slots now,  and u now have 2 gigs of ram u can buy 2 1 gig sticks of ram.

if the utility doesn't work, go to your computer manufacturer's website and see the owner's manual as to how much your computer will hold and type of ram

  2. Look on your mb to see how many ram slots you have.

  3. Ok there are 2 slots empty. So what.

You have 2gb RAM. There are plenty of computer owners who would give there left pinky to have 2gb.

When you have  1 x 2 gb, you could buy one more 1 x 2 gb.

When you have however 2 x 1 gb you better do not change that.

You will not be able to use those 2gb of  ram any more,  because there is no way that you get 4gb using the 2 x 1gb.

    Perhaps you can sell them.

You either put in one of 4gb or 2 of 2 gb. Other alternatives you do not have. Why do you want 4gb. Do you really need it.

Not that long ago, we wer happy to have 256mb and very very very happy with 512mb. I am not talking abut 4 or 5 years ago, no last year were most happy with 512mb or 1024mb. Things are changing too fast with computers.

  4. How many slots does your motherboard have in total?  You said slot 1 and 2 are empty in your first sentance.

It sounds to me like you have a 1GB stick in two slots. In order to get to 4GB you will have to remove them and replace with 2GB sticks.

Keep in mind that some motherboards do have 4 slots for memory sticks.

  5. I'm guessing you've got 4 slots containing 2 sticks a 1gb each so 2 are empty , just add 2 more.

But before you do is 4gb necessary??? No game on earth yet requires 4gb. Only extremely heavy design software will.

Many people have this idea that more ram makes your PC faster, this is only true when you are running out, With 2gb I doubt very much you are.

  6. Well it depends on youre motherboard. If youre motherboard has couple more slots then i would think you can. Ihave a pentium 3 ( A fossil I know!) and it has three slots and i have 2 gb of ram ( 2 1gb ram chips) sO CHECK OUT THE YOUR MOTHERBOARD 1ST THEN SEE IF YOU CAN.
