when a police officer is in an auto accident, and is in the wrong who pays?

does the cop pay out of his own pocket or does the city pay?

by the way, i do not mean when he is in pursuit of a suspect, i mean just a normal traffic accident

  1. The Agency carries insurance on it's vehicles and it pays.  I work for a State Agency and the State of North Carolina self insures so when one of it's vehicles is involved in an accident and the state employee is at fault then the State pays for the damages.

    Depending on the seriousness of the accident the Officer could be found negligent and ordered to pay restitutions if there is a civil law suit stemming from the accident.  That could come out of the Officer's pocket.  The State could also be found negligent and ordered to pay.


  2. if it was while he was working then the police departments insurance company would pay for it, unless they are self insured.

  3. The city is the one that pays because the city is the one who pays for the insurance of the Police vehicles

  4. I'm not sure, but though the gov often gives someone who works for them a break, i think the officer is just a person. It may depend on whether or not it is an official car. Assuming its his/her personal car, im sure s/he pays. Well, their insurance does, but u get the idea
