Can someone define reconnaissance for me?

  1. Sneaking around to get information about the enemy.

    For example, a soldier on a reconnaissance mission might sneak around and in to a town, to find out about the lay of the land, how many enemy troops to expect, what sort of weapons they'd be up against, and how many civilians are present.
