"learning without thought is labor lost thought without learning is intellectual death".

what does the said quote mean to express?

"Learning without thoughts is labor lost"

Roughly, I think, learning can be just reading a book and following repetition, such as learning a quote, you might read the line 100 times but it is like being a robot, but read it once and think what it means, apply thought images to it, if it is a poem about life, love, relationships then think about it in relation to your 'people' around you, this is applying visual images to aid learning. I do this all the time as I am a trainer.  

"Thought without learning is intellectual death"

Some times when I day dream I imagine

1) Being a martial arts expert and being indestructible.

2) Other times when I day dream I look at some persons behaviour in a situation and analyse this, do I like it? Is it good? Do I do this, whether bad or good? Can I do it better? Should I 'assimilate' this to make myself a better person or make sure I never do that?

Number 1) may be fun but it is pointless, non educational/ learning thought i.e. "Thought without learning is intellectual death".

Number 2) is me attempting to make myself a better person, to learn something new I can do or make sure I don't do. This is the opposite of "Thought without learning is intellectual death". This is thought with learning.

BASICALLY IT MEANS THAT IF YOU LEARN SOMETHING, BUT IT DOESN'T STIMULATE YOUR THINKING PROCESS, THEN THERE IS NOTHING GAINED; AND THINKING WITHOUT LEARNING ANYTHING MEANS THAT INTELLECTUALLY, YOU'RE BRAIN DEAD.
